Gigi Lamayne: Mermaids and Stuff Album Review

In recent times, Gigi Lamayne has been exploring different sounds and styles with the music she has been putting out. It was not clear what to expect from her latest offering, Mermaids and Stuff. With a total of 19 tracks, she was determined not to hold out. 


The name hints at some sort of mystical element that might be a strong influence for the album. But apart from the mention of mermaids on the intro, there isn’t much of a thread around any mysticism. The self-titled intro is not a strong introduction to the album, it runs the risk of losing many listeners right at the beginning.


Gigi follows a trap style of rapping through most of the album, delivering slowed-down trap flows with intermittent pauses. There are places where the cadence doesn't feel natural. Gigi is able to pull the style off but it feels incomplete, or maybe unsuited, to be more frank.


That, coupled with cringy singing like the choruses of Hang Up On You,  Fire and Emazulwini put the project on a back-foot. The vocals could've been opportunities to rope in the necessary features. Not to say she can’t sing, but she did not do herself justice on those joints. 


I Gotta Go is one of the good entries on the album. It features a verse from Nadia Nakai and Te’Amo on vocals. It feels short but it does the job. The two verses complement each other to make for a vibey joint that still showcases some rap skill.


On No Love she's more in her element and that's reflected throughout the track. The hook is more natural, less experimental. Heritage is also another good track. One that could salvage the album but might not get that chance due to the song arrangement.


Gigi brought out her baddie persona with this album. In some instances it worked but in a lot of spots it felt out of place and forced. She doesn't always land on her feet when she goes for commercial appeal. Joint sums up the album in one song. More than just the bad judgement on vocals and placement, the disappointment in this album is in the composition. Such awful writing and amateur delivery should not be a thing with someone who's been active this long. Some songs should simply have not made the cut.
