New Releases

2018 has been the gift that keeps on giving on the music front. At times the mount of projects released has been overwhelming to say the least. The last two weeks have been no different. Here’s a break down of some of the latest releases to hit the streets.
Emtee – DIY2
You might remember D.I.Y as the title of the mixtape that gave Emtee his first big break into the spotlight, the mixtape that had Roll Up in it. In true trapper fashion, we might see D.I.Y to be a series of releases
on its own. D.I.Y2 is Emtee’s most recent release after having dropped Manando not so long ago in 2017. D.I.Y 2 pales in comparison to Manando and doesn’t truly reflect the standard of song writing Emtee has held up for himself.
Kid X - Thank Tha King
Thank Tha King is the album Kid X has been itching to put out. This is made evident by the effort put behind the project, with a total of
26 tracks delivered over a double disc format. Kid X’s style has often had him branded as a Kwaito artist, to which he conceded. But Thank Tha King is far from being a Kwaito album, if anything, it’s Hip Hop but better left off undefined.
It’s a beautiful musical offering, rich on production. Kid X worked in a lot of singing into the album and all of it hits the mark. The great production and musical journey makes up for the parts where he goes off beat and misses rhyming opportunities on raps. The sound is authentic South African. While album won’t place him as a contender for top rapper lists, it’s undeniably one of the best out. Definitely worth a listen if you haven’t already gotten to it.
J Molley – Leader Of The Wave
Leader Of the Wave is a 6 track EP by singer J Molley. The title track is badly executed from the beat to the finished product. Not to say the whole thing went to the crapper though. This was quickly salvaged by the second track, Lightning, and the bar was kept higher for the rest of the EP. The emphasis on the EP is on singing on trap beats with not a lot of rapping worked in. Leader Of The Wave is mostly a solo effort with only two tracks spotting features. On the content J Molley sings about women and getting intoxicated, with guaranteed reminders of how he gets this money and stacks it.
L-Tido – 16
Following what seemed like a reinvention when L-Tido
announced he wants to be called 16V and started referring to himself as such, one would be forgiven to expect a reinvention in his style of rap as well. This is not the case on the 13 track album, 16, which could be considered self-titled. L-Tido pretty much keeps to his own style throughout the album, working in a variety of sounds along the way. On this album, L-Tido sets out to not only show his rap skills but to entertain as well. 16 spots both playful and technical content, with L-Tido getting openly personal on Glitz Gang Forever. Letter To The Game is Tido’s take on the state of the local Hip Hop scene, where he fits in it and what frustrates him about it. The production on this project could’ve been better. It remains to be seen how the masses will receive this album.
